XCOM does not launch

According to users in the 2K forums, you may have an uninstalled patch preventing you from launching XCOM. Restart Steam and you should expect the patch fix to be downloaded allowing you to run XCOM succcessfully.

XCOM error: “Corrupt Game File”

Chill, and stop hammering that Play button.

If you’re using Steam, the first thing you should do is to verify the integrity of your Steam game cache. If the error persists, make sure your DirectX is updated or installed properly. For some users, a reinstallation of DirectX fixed the problem.

Cannot hear voices but music and effects play properly

Thanks to TheMystic from the 2K forums for this fix:

I was having the same issue, came to find out that my 5.1 Logitech kit’s control module wasn’t properly sending audio to anything but the left and right channels. 3D sound mode was activated on the module, and turning it off seems to have fixed the problem.

XCOM crashes randomly

Random crashes are usually caused by a mix of minor elements on your PC. We recommend going through the following checklist and adjusting accordingly based on your situation.

  1. Update your nVidia / ATI graphics drivers.
  2. Turn off SLI / Crossfire then start the game. See if it stabilizes XCOM performance.
  3. Turn off your anti-virus software before launching the XCOM, but make sure you turn it back on after playing. Make sure Windows Defender is also disabled.
  4. Try using only one GPU first (turn the other one off via your nVidia / ATI graphics control panel)
  5. Try running the game in Windowed Mode (frequently works for low-end PCs)
  6. Disable anti-aliasing and filtering, then restart XCOM
  7. Disable V-sync, then restart XCOM
  8. Disable background apps, and turn off your anti-virus software
  9. In Windows 7 right-click the XCOM exe file, go to the ‘Compatibility Mode’ tab and check ‘Disable Desktop Composition’

How to zoom in the base

Probably one of the most popular problems out there is that users seem to be having trouble zooming in the antfarm base. Try holding down the middle mouse button and see if that works. Other users found that adjusting their key bindings does the trick. If those solutions don’t work, let us know in the comments section below.

XCOM camera problems

To those having problems with unexplained camera movements, please check for any other plugged controllers such as joysticks and gamepads as this will mess up your camera controls.

XCOM has Bad Textures, Texture Breaks, Texture Glitch on gaming laptop

If your XCOM installation is suffering from bad textures, disable anti-aliasing and filtering in your in-game video options. If your BIOS has the option, disable ‘Switchable Graphics’. This will remove your laptop PC’s ability to automatically switch between the onboard intel graphics card and the nVidia / ATI graphics chip, thus smoothening out gameplay.

Fix for Quad Core and Multi-Core PCs

If you’re using a Quad Core rig, try this fix to reduce possible crashing problems:

  1. Start XCOM
  2. Alt+Tab Out of the game
  3. Open Task Manager
  4. Right click on XXX.exe
  5. Set Affinity
  6. Select core 0 and 1 only. You need to run the game on two CPU’s basically, so to avoid the crash to desktop.

XCOM keeps freezing or stuttering in-game

Users in the 2K forums claim that this may be due to GPU overheating issues. Make sure you have sufficient cooling for your PC tower. Try opening the side panel of your PC tower and blowing an electric fan through it and run XCOM.

great, had the launch issue and this fixed it. also didn’t know about the zoom thing, so thanks!!

  2. James says:

Can’t zoom in the base. Tried middle mouse button and moving mouse up and down. Nothing. Tried changing the keybinding for that to just some key, and still can’t zoom in.

  3. Greg says:

Same issue as James. Cannot zoon in base. Tried everything suggested.

  4. satyesu says:

My mouse and frame rate stutter, but I’ve had no such problems with other games, so I don’t think overheating is my problem.

  5. Dale says:

Impressive. I’m an experienced programmer, and I can think of any way to design a program that works on 2 cores, but not on 4–short of explicitly checking the number of cores and intentionally crashing if it isn’t 2.

I have a quad-core machine, but setting the affinity didn’t fix it for me. It still crashes soon after starting the game.

  6. Hewko says:

Did all the above for crashing on start up, nothing worked.

  7. Dale says:

I got it to work once by reducing the resolution and dropping the graphics quality to minimum. Once. It’s crashing again now.

  8. Raphael says:

Tried all the above. Game crashes on the first mission when the enemy attacks…

  9. depthdefy says:

The game keeps freezing up at the exact spot in the game. I sent my squad out to a terror mission and en route a ufo popped up that I had to intercept. My squad got to the mission before I intercepted the ufo and after the mission is over and they are heading home the game freezes on the globe view just as the interceptor reaches the ufo. All you see is the globe with clouds moving and the background music playing and it sits there forever. The only way around it is to go back to a previous save game and not intercept the ufo and redo the terror mission. Quite annoying.

Sorry to hear that my friend. Can you check maybe your GPU is overheating? Sometimes for lower spec gfx cards you can get past graphics intensive parts by going into windowed mode and reverting back after that specific part.

In the Engineering Buy/Build screen, I show a backlog of requests, but it says that there are no current projects. The first time, I requested scopes, and they showed up and were available to my troops. However, subsequent requests have no effect. Note: the second time I placed an order, I put requested two different items.

I have tried everything under fixes for “XCom crashes randomly” and “fix for Quad Core and Multi-Core PC’s”. While the things work in the beginning, like setting the affinity, it goes back to crashing randomly after a little while. I have noticed a pattern in the crashes that applies about three-fourths of the time: if there is too much going on it crashes, I.E. opening and closing a menu repeatedly, or occasionally skipping cutscenes/dialogue. It mostly happens in the base, and my game rarely ever crashes during missions. The most common time will be while scanning or jumping between areas in the base quickly.

Okay, this is my problem. I complete a mission, and my skyranger flies back to base, and all the sudden, I’m looking at the world map, over the area I had just been, nothing moving, and the only thing I can do is “Scan For Activity” I click on this, and watch time go by, and nothing else. Anything being worked on completes, and sits at 0 days, I even tried seeing if the glitch would work itself out, if I waited till Council Meeting. It just reset and kept on going. I tried going to a slightly earlier save, and again, same thing happened, when I completed the mission. I’ve tried rebooting my computer, as my husband had that happen to him, and rebooting seemed to fix it. However, that’s not happening for me.

My game always crashes after mission when i first meet Ethereal and Sectopod, after i complete the mission, my skyranged flies back to base and after landing sequence screen just go black and i get “this program is not responding” error, I’ve tried to load older save, but then i get ethereal/sectopod mission again and same thing happens… I’ve tried all fixes under “XCOM error: “Corrupt Game File””, “XCOM crashes randomly” and “Fix for Quad Core and Multi-Core PCs”, nothing helps, any ideas?
