The Cave is a new adventure game from Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion creator Ron Gilbert, and Double Fine Productions, the award-winning studio behind Psychonauts and Brütal Legend. The game is certainly adventure-packed and the Crash Wiki team certainly appreciates the amount of detail put into this game. There are some crashes, errors, and bugs you might encounter though, so we’ve compiled a list of fixes you can try out. Good luck!

Can’t load save game in The Cave
If you get the error where you try to load your previous game by selecting the “Continue Game” option and the game brings you back to the main menu, try this:
- Go to C:UsersYOUR USER NAMEAppDataRoamingDoublefine
- There should be folder with numbers like: 845615615654
- Copy all files from that folder(auto, prefs, unlocks) to main folder: C:UsersYOUR USER NAMEAppDataRoamingDoublefine and overwrite all files.
Another solution is to backup your prefs.sav file in the save folder, then remove it from the folder and launch the game and see if that works to fix it.
The Cave characters and objects get stuck
Simply restart the game to fix this glitch.
Cannot select characters
Just pick the character with your mouse, then press esc and choose drop out. This should leave you with the controller controlling all 3 characters.
How to remove the 30 FPS cap
According to the developers, the core renderer is (currently) capped at 30 Hz. They will remove that cap in a future update.
You can also try this workaround posted by HenryGuy:
When you go to Settings -> Display you will notice the Resolution on top.
Notice how it says in brackets (##hz)
HZ is your monitors refresh rate, it will automatically detect the allowed refresh rates. When you click your resolution it will cycle through the available refresh rates BEFORE switching resolutions.
Simply change it to your monitors max, 60hz, or in my case, 120hz, and leave vsync on. This will allow the game to function up to x HZ.
If your vsync is set really low then the game while rendering will dip 4-5fps, sometimes more depending on the system, regardless of how amazing your pc is. Its near impossible to make a game render perfectly on each machine so dips below vsync are expected. For some reason this is especially true when the restrictions are far below the operating capacity of your PC.
Once you have updated your display settings, the game will play much smoother now. I’m glad I always go to settings and change everything to max before I play a game otherwise I might have been thoroughly frustrated like some customers.
Double fine should incorporate a check that searches for the highest HZ on PC only. Their solution is perfect for every other platform.
If this doesn’t help make the game play smoother, disable the steam overlay.
The Cave Error – Failed to start game (unknown error)
How to set controllers other than Xbox 360 controllers
Try launch bigpicture, bind your controller buttons in options, and then launch the game trough bigpicture. Worked for me, and I’m using a really uncommon gamepad (gamecube controller with magicjoybox gcn to usb adapter).
If that doesn’t work, download x360ce and put the exe and .dll in steamapps/common/thecave
Stuck at Time Traveler level in The Cave
There is a rock that is covering a hole and you need to push it away from the hole in the dino age. Hold the interaction button and switch characters to do this.
The Cave on Mac crashes when saving
Update: A patch update was released to fix this. Let us know in the comments if you’re still getting this problem.
The Cave transfer cloud saves from OSX to Windows
You can fix it by grabbing the savegames from OSX and copying the entire folder to the savegame folder in Windows.
The directories are something like: OSX: User/Library/Application Support/Doublefine/TheCave/ ###### (bunch of numbers)
Grab the entire number-folder and paste it to the following directory in Windows: UsersYOURUSERNAMEAppDataRoamingDoublefineTheCave or something.
You should be able to find it.
Cave.exe APPCRASH on launch
Update: This has been resolved by a recent patch. Let us know in the comments if you still get crashes.
The Cave Black screen and out of range message
- Go to %APPDATA%DoublefineTheCave
- Create an empty text file called screen.dat if it does not exist.
- Open screen.dat in the text editor of you choice.
- The format of the file should look like the following, but change the details to meet the capabilities of your display.
fullscreen = true
width = 1920
height = 1080
refreshrate = 60
vsync = false
The Cave not in game library
If you can’t find The Cave in your game library, try looking under ‘C’ instead of ‘T’.
